Join us Labor Day week on our "Portugal north to the south experience."  Medieval castles, cobblestone villages, rugged coastline, golden beaches and charming cities make Portugal an ideal place to take in.  In the north enjoy Porto, the second largest Portuguese city, along with a day trip to the mesmerizing landscape of Douro Valley.  In central Portugal, Lisbon is full of culinary delights and historic stories.  At last, a visit to Portugal is not complete without a visit to the southern coastal town of Lagos.  Full of glorious beaches, buzzing nightlife and a charming historic center, this is a great way to end our Portugal experience!

Friday, August 30: Departure
Depart your city so you are to arrive to Porto (in the north) by early afternoon on Saturday.

Saturday, August 31: Arrive & Porto Afternoon Walking Tour
Upon our afternoon arrival to Porto, we'll transfer to our centrally located hotel.   We'll have time for a quick lunch before our private 3hr walking tour with a local guide.  We'll wander through the cobbled streets, take in breath-taking viewpoints & charming squares of downtown Porto with our experienced local guide.  Discover the locals' favorite places, best Porto's food and learn about its rich history.  We visit São Bento railway station, Santa Catarina, Batalha square, top of the Bridge Luis I, Cathedral (Sé), Barredo neighborhood, Ribeira quarter.

Sunday, September 1- Douro Valley: Wine Tasting, Iconic Views, Medieval Villages, & River Cruise
A trip to Porto would not be complete without visiting Douro Valley.  Whether you are a wine lover or not, this area is known for it's truly amazing scenery.  We'll head out with our private transportation to the Douro Valley to taste, photograph, relax, and sail on the Douro River to get the full experience of this beautiful and amazing area of Portugal.

Our 1hr Rabelo boat ride will be from the town of Pinhão which marks the start of port production.  This boat tour stretches on the river not visible from the roads.  It's a fantastic way to see wine producing farmhouses and terraces and vineyards that form a unique landscape and considered UNESCO World Heritage Site.  This will also be the areas we'll visit two wineries Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta das Carvalhas. 

Monday, September 2: Open Day in Porto/Coimbra/Drive to Lisbon
Today is an open day for you to enjoy Porto the way you'd like.  Take in the city more or go on a day trip outside of Porto.
Below are some recommended choices:  Hop-on Hop Off Bus, Food and Wine Tour, or visit a neighboring wine cellar,
Visit Livraria Lello (ne of the most beautiful book stores in the world), Enjoy a river view wine spa, visit Cafe Majestic, visit church of Sao Francisco, take a Arrabida bridge climb tour, wander the Ribeira District, ride the funicular, and much more.

In the mid-afternoon we'll start our drive to Lisbon (3hr), stopping to visit the historic cultured beauty town of Coinbra.  Here was Portugal’s medieval capital for more than a century and it's home to the country’s oldest and most prestigious university. Its steeply-stacked historic center dates to Moorish times and is wonderfully atmospheric with its dark cobbled lanes and monumental cathedral.

We'll arrive to Lisbon in the early evening.

Tuesday, September 3: Walking Tour & Open Day Lisbon
After breakfast we'll have a private city tour with a local guide.  Our guided walking tour takes us to the major sites of central Lisbon. As we follow our local guide, we'll get great insight into the city's history and culture. Experience old Lisbon by walking around the Moorish Alfama neighborhood (the city’s oldest quarter) and taking a trip on one of Lisbon's vintage trams. Admire the Eden Theatre, Sé de Lisboa cathedral and the cafes and boutiques of the elegant Chiado neighborhood.

Our tour will finish in early afternoon in which you'll have the remaining day to explore Lisbon as a group or on your own. Here are some recommendations:

Wednesday, September 4: Day Trip to Sintra
After a breakfast at the hotel, we'll begin our journey to the delightful Portuguese village of Sintra.  This is regarded as the best day trip from Lisbon and UNESCO has granted it Word Heritage Site status.  Hidden within these pine covered hills are extravagant palaces, opulent mansions and the ruins of an ancient castle.

The first stop is the fantastic Palace of Queluz, built in the 18th Century, which was the official royal residence of the king D. Pedro IV of Portugal.  Climb to the Moorish Castle where the construction of the first sections of its wall dates from the 8th and 9th century. From the castle, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the whole region. It can’t be missed!

The next stop is the Pena Palace where you can admire a mix of architectural styles in the interior as well as in the exterior. The Pena Palace is one of the best examples of Romanticism from the 19th century. Make sure to have your camera ready to capture the fantastic landscape surrounding the Palace.

Thursday, September 5: Open Day in Lisbon/Drive to Lagos Algarve
Today is an open day for you to enjoy Lisbon the way you'd like.  Below are some recommendations:
Time Out Market (foodie people), Se Cathedral and Sao Roque Church, Sao Jorge Castle, Jeronimos Monastery (UNESCO World Heritage Site),  Belem Tower (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Carmo Convent, Explore Baixa and/or Alfamo District, Lisbon Story Center, Foodie/Wine Tours, Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, Berardo Museum, Street Art Tour, Architecture Tour,

In the early to mid-afternoon we'll start our journey to southern Portugal!
Our 3hr drive will take us to Sagres, a laid-back small town at the southwest tip of Portugal.  Here will have time for photo opportunities and to visit the beautiful Cabo de Sao Vicente lighthouse.  Our drive will continue east to the lively and stunning town of Lagos where we'll be spending the night.

Friday, September 6: Lagos Boat Cruise
After breakfast, we'll set sail in the Bay of Lagos and continue along the most impressive caves and rock formations. After experiencing this beauty of nature we anchor in a sheltered bay.  Here the crew will prepare and serve us grilled chicken, salad, bread and wine. We'll have an opportunity to swim/snorkel gear in this gorgeous cliff area of Algarve.  Our captain will show us the famous caves of "Ponta da Piedade" by a smaller boat. Time for you to feel the magic of sailing, relax, sip a cocktail and enjoy the sun, sea and the view.  This tour will last approximately 4.5hrs.  When we finish in mid-afternoon, you'll have the remaining of the day to explore on your own.

Saturday, September 7: Open Day Lagos
Today you have an open day to explore the area and town of Lagos.  Largo lies on the banks of the Rio Bensafrim with 16th- century walls enclosing the old town's pretty cobbled streets and picturesque plazas and churches.  This area offers every activity under the sun plus a pumping nightlife.  Below are some recommendations of how to spend your day.
-Praia do Pinhao is an untouched beach, surrounded by red cliffs, with clear waters and white sands.
-Visit Lagos Fish Market or Farmers Market to get in touch with the real locals and the typical rural lifestyle.
-Igreja de Santo Antonio Church
-Kayaking, horseback riding, surfing lessons, cliff walking, and biking

Sunday, September 8: Depart Home
After breakfast, we'll transfer to Faro International Airport for our late morning/early afternoon flight arriving to NYC in evening on Sunday.
