Friday, August 23: Arrival & Historic City Walking Tour
We''ll arrive to Cartagena in the early afternoon and transfer to our hotel in Old Town and enjoy a lunch before our afternoon walking tour. Our local guide, motivated by their passion for Cartagena and its historical and cultural treasures, will give us a narration of the main sites of the walled City.
This is a perfect introduction to Cartagena, including all the principal historic sites. Some highlights include Museo San Pedro Claver, Palacio de la Inquisicion, Museo de Oro, Catedral Santa Catalina, Iglesia Santo Domingo, Teatro Heredia & Museo Naval.
Saturday, August 24: Mercado Bazurto Market Tour & Open Day
Our morning will start with a ("no ordinary") Mercado Bazurto Market Tour. For all the photography and cultural enthusiast, this tour is for you. Experience the "real" Columbia on this "People-to-People" walking tour. We'll encounter extreme poverty, food practices that can be shocking (or seem unhygienic), and some pretty bad smells. You will also find huge smiles, beautiful colors, fascinating scenes, music, warmth, and undeniable realness. We'll start at Cafe Juan Valdez at the Centro de Convenciones (Convention Center) in Getsemani. This is the site of the original market.
We will then walk through Getsemani as an introduction to this vibrant neighborhood, before taking a bus to the market. The bus is crammed with locals and very sweaty but is definitely part of the experience. Once at the market, we will enjoy a typical lunch of fried fish and steamed yuca washed down with the much loved agua de panela. You can also bring along extra money if you'd like to try additional/other foods and drinks. During the tour, we will see and explain different ingredients, learn about local customs and way of life, interact with the friendly stall holders and locals, experience the music and dance, and take a bunch of amazing photos. Our tour will be finish around 1pm and you will have the remaining afternoon to explore on your own.
Sunday, August 25: Rosario Islands Day Trip
The Rosario Islands are a group of private islands off the coast of Cartagena, Colombia and was declared a national park in 1977. The beautiful array of natural flora and fauna is sure to impress with its amazing coral reefs. On our tour, we'll visit Gente de Mar one of the best spots on Isla Grande with the most beautiful beaches in the entire archipelago. It is a lovely place surrounded by turquoise waters, awesome coral reefs and white sandy beaches where you can enjoy an unforgettable experience of relaxation and fun. Here, relax in the middle of the Caribbean sea, surrounded by crystal clear waters and soft, white sand.
Our trip will start in the early morning as we take a 45 minute trip by speed boat to Gente de Mar in Isla Grande, where a local host will be waiting for us with a welcome drink. During this day of complete rest and relaxation we can swim in the warm, crystal clear water before enjoying a delicious lunch, take a boat trip through the green, tropical mangroves, or simply relax on the beaches of this little piece of paradise. Additionally, you can also try kayaking, stand up paddle, snorkeling, or diving through the coral reefs, seeing shoal coral fishes along the way.
